Bovisort FemCell
Development of an innovative technology for sorting sperm in order to obtain cattle of a specific sex
Technology of sorting bull sperm tto obtain female calves by determining the effect of gold nanoparticles on sperm structures.
Achieving the goals involves obtaining dairy heifers with a significant reduction in semen costs and a higher female fertilization rate.
- Minimizing sperm space;
- Higher fertilization potential of cells, increase in calving efficiency, loss of embryos;
- Enhanced X sperm equipment in load;
- Maximizing the number of female calves born;
- Possibility of using nano gold for sperm sorting;
- Lower cost of producing insemination doses, eliminating the costs of producing a female.
Project activities
Cytometric, biochemical and computer-assisted analysis of bull's sperm. The influence of gold nanoparticles on cell viability, DNA integrity, acrosome integrity, mitochondrial potential, oxidative stress parameters and sperm motility.
The main benefits of the project
Effects:
- Innovative technology with high implementation potential (application value)
- Increased competitiveness with respect to other commercial sperm sorting technologies (economic value)
- Reducing the costs of obtaining replacement females (economic value)
- Understanding the mechanisms of influence of gold nanoparticles on sperm cells, the effectiveness of fertilisation, and the development of early pregnancy (scientific value)
Practice summary
The necessity to develop a new technology results from the need to obtain a highly effective sorted product, available to a larger group of farmers at an affordable price, which is of great importance, especially considering today's milk production costs. Implementing this technology will allow for high semen effectiveness and will significantly increase the rate of conception, reducing the loss of embryos by limiting the negative effects of sperm separation. This global breakthrough technology will allow for increased genetic progress in breeding herds and insemination stations, which will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the European, and in particular the Polish, insemination and breeding market.
